Making Tax Digital, in plain English

Making Tax Digital (MTD) is HMRC's programme to move UK tax onto a digital footing. Instead of one annual return compiled from paper records, you keep digital records throughout the year and submit updates through compatible software. It already applies to VAT, and from April 2026 it extends to Income Tax for higher-income sole traders and landlords.

The practical change is twofold: your records must be kept digitally — spreadsheets alone increasingly won't qualify — and you'll submit more often. For Income Tax that means four quarterly updates plus a final declaration, rather than a single Self-Assessment. Software like LedgerlyPro exists to make that rhythm effortless.

Even if you're below the threshold today, keeping MTD-ready digital records now means you're never scrambling to comply later — and you get the day-to-day benefits of automated bookkeeping straight away.

Frequently asked questions

What is MTD-compliant bookkeeping software?

MTD-compliant software keeps digital records and connects to HMRC so you can submit Making Tax Digital updates for VAT and Income Tax. LedgerlyPro keeps your records digital and MTD-ready, so you and your accountant can file quarterly updates on time.

Who has to follow Making Tax Digital?

All VAT-registered businesses already follow MTD for VAT. MTD for Income Tax applies to sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 from April 2026, and over £30,000 from April 2027.

What happens if I miss an MTD deadline?

MTD uses a points-based penalty system: you receive a point for each missed submission, and once you reach the threshold a £200 fine applies, with further fines for continued lateness. LedgerlyPro's deadline reminders help you avoid them.

Do I need separate software for MTD VAT and Income Tax?

No. LedgerlyPro keeps your records ready for both, so the same digital books support your VAT returns and your Income Tax updates.
