General information only. This is not tax, legal or financial advice. Check HMRC guidance or speak to an accountant for your situation.

Business mileage records are easiest when you log trips as they happen, not months later.

What to record

For each trip, keep:

  • date
  • start and end location
  • business purpose
  • miles travelled
  • vehicle type
  • client or project if relevant

Business or personal?

Only business travel should go in your mileage records. Ordinary commuting rules can be complex, so check HMRC guidance if a journey is not clearly business-related.

Mileage checklist

  • Log trips weekly
  • Keep client/project notes
  • Separate personal journeys
  • Review totals before tax deadlines
  • Keep supporting calendar or job notes where useful

Use Mileage in LedgerlyPro to keep trip logs and HMRC mileage allowance calculations organised.
