Business mileage records are easiest when you log trips as they happen, not months later.
What to record
For each trip, keep:
- date
- start and end location
- business purpose
- miles travelled
- vehicle type
- client or project if relevant
Business or personal?
Only business travel should go in your mileage records. Ordinary commuting rules can be complex, so check HMRC guidance if a journey is not clearly business-related.
Mileage checklist
- Log trips weekly
- Keep client/project notes
- Separate personal journeys
- Review totals before tax deadlines
- Keep supporting calendar or job notes where useful
